01 / FIT AND PLACEMENT
Measure the product, the route in and the space around it
Product dimensions answer only the first question. A tower fan needs a stable patch of floor and room to oscillate. A cordless vacuum needs somewhere to stand or mount, plus clearance to remove its dust bin. An air fryer needs worktop depth, overhead space and ventilation. A large personal-care device may need dry storage near a suitable outlet.
Write down width, depth and height, then add the space needed to open a lid, swing a door, remove a filter or reach a control. Check the narrowest doorway, stair turn or lift on the delivery route. For appliances, confirm the cable length and outlet location rather than assuming an extension lead is appropriate.
Useful fit questions
- Can the product be used without moving it every time?
- Is there enough clearance for ventilation, lids, doors and routine cleaning?
- Can the heaviest or dirtiest removable part reach a sink, bin or washing area easily?
- Will the delivery package fit through the route even if the assembled product would?
02 / CARE AND OWNERSHIP COST
Count the maintenance the product creates
A low purchase price can hide a high-friction routine. Filters need washing or replacement. Shaver heads and brush rolls wear out. Water tanks develop scale. Air-fryer baskets take up sink or dishwasher space. Subscriptions can turn a small first order into a recurring charge.
Look for the care section in the manual before buying. Note what must be done after every use, every week and every few months. Search the merchant site for replacement parts and record their price. If a product depends on a proprietary bag, cartridge, head or filter, confirm that the part is sold in your market and is not already difficult to find.
For clothing and textiles, ownership cost is often time rather than parts. Dry-clean-only fabric, delicate cycles, ironing and slow drying can make an otherwise comfortable item impractical. The best choice is the one whose care routine you are likely to keep.
03 / MODEL AND SELLER CHECK
Match the exact model to the exact image and destination
Retail feeds often reuse a brand name across several products, and images can remain attached after a destination changes. Before relying on a comparison, match the model number or ASIN in the destination URL with the title and product image. Then confirm the seller, included accessories, colour and regional plug or voltage.
A familiar brand name does not make two models interchangeable. A personal-care device may include different heads. A vacuum may use a different battery or floor tool. An appliance may look identical while its capacity or control panel changes. Save the model number in your notes so warranty and replacement-part searches refer to the item you actually bought.
04 / RETURN FRICTION
Read the return policy while the product is still hypothetical
Return rights are most useful before checkout, when you can still choose another seller. Check the number of days, whether the window starts at order or delivery, who pays return postage, and whether a restocking fee applies. For bulky goods, find out whether collection is arranged or whether you must ship the item yourself.
Opened cosmetics, grooming tools and other hygiene-sensitive products may have narrower rules. Made-to-measure blinds, personalised textiles and final-sale clothing may not be returnable for change of mind. If fit cannot be confirmed from the page, request a sample or written clarification before ordering.
05 / CLAIMS AND EVIDENCE
Treat promotional language as a question, not a conclusion
Words such as premium, professional, quiet, sustainable, intelligent and clinically inspired are starting points. Look for the specification that would make the claim useful: a measured noise range, a material declaration, repair support, an ingredient list, a test method or a clearly described feature.
This matters most for wellness language. A product page can describe intended cosmetic or lifestyle use, but it should not replace medical advice or guarantee an outcome. Compare ingredients, directions, contraindications and seller authenticity, and seek qualified advice where a condition or treatment is involved.
